Thursday was an especially fun day for Whitley. We drove over to the Como Zoo, where we all marveled at how close and active the animals were! I'd never seen so many polar bears ambling around before, nor so many monkeys and apes. Whitley's favorite, the ostriches, came right up to the fence, poking their little beaks through the holes as if daring someone to stick out a hand. The zoo was very walkable, and we saw all the animals in about an hour, leaving plenty of time to spend in the amusement park section. It had lots of rides perfect for Whitley, and she rode them all.
Tom received so many fireworks in that little "Tub-O-Fun" that he fired 'em up every evening!
The Como Arboretum is a beautiful building and entrance to the zoo.
I couldn't get over the huge, human-like gorillas! Their expressions and motions were fascinating to me. Whitley, on the other hand, found them terrifying. When confronted with the one housed indoors (who was seated directly facing the glass, glaring at all his visitors), she literally climbed up my side, begging me to hold her and get away from it. The gorilla outside seemed less threatening to her; she still refers to him as "the one up top."
The sea lion made Whitley happy!
Yea! A red race car, just like Lightning McQueen!!

I thought this ride was cute. It rumbled along, tipping forward and back as if really pulled by a horse.
All of the kids were shaking the reins and yelling "Giddy up!"
Tom squeezed in to twirl around in the tea cups. hee hee Whitley thought all the spinning was hysterical!
And they had a merry-go-round, our all-time favorite!
Whoops- a bit out of order here... This train was the slowest moving thing, but Whitley waved happily from the caboose.
Ok, back to the merry-go-round. It is a restored, antique one, and there are guides who give a ten-minute spiel about its history and the rules for riding. And DON'T even THINK you can miss out on hearing the instructions and still get on... no... We hurried up right on time to hear the last few minutes of the presentation, but the guy wouldn't let us on because we had missed the beginning! I was so aggravated, and Whitley didn't understand why she couldn't ride when it hadn't started yet and was far from full. She kept trying to pry open his fingers and make him take her ticket! Oh, well. It was fun once we were on it. :)
