Funny Whitley

My funny girl makes a silly face. :)

A fond memory I have of my Aunt Betty and Uncle Mike is that they kept journals of the amusing comments my cousins made while growing up. They were called "Kim's Quips" and "Jenny's Jargon," and I used to flip through both every time we visited. (I'm pretty sure my cute little sister and her unique sayings made it into the books a few times, as well.) Well, in family tradition, I thought I'd write a quick blog about some of "Whitley's Witticisms". She's not making guesses about where babies come from or pointing out the different body parts of both genders or anything (some of the more classic examples of the "darndest things" kids say). She doesn't even speak in complete sentences all the time! But all her little ways manage to make Tom and I laugh daily. So, here are some examples of my funny Whitley:

1. First of all, she says "Bye" to everything when she's done playing with it and ready to move on to the next thing. Last night she said, "Bye Mickey Snow White book!" Tonight it was, "Bye water tub! Thank you!" Very cute.

2. Speaking of the tub, she has started posing little conversations with her bath toys. Tonight she said, "Hi, Duck! Was your name? Wan go swimmin'? See shark? Whale? Penguin? Mermaid?" She did the exact same thing with a few other toys, including Dora. "Hi, Dora! Was your name? Wan go swimmin'?..." But what really made me laugh was when she wanted me to do it. She put Diego on the edge of the tub, and started it out for me, "Hi, Diego!" Then she waited. I didn't say anything, so she put her hand on my cheek and pushed my face towards Diego. I got the hint and asked him a question, looking at Whitley for the answer. She put her little hand on my cheek again, turning me to Diego. She did this four times. I was giggling at her insistent touch and wondered how long I was going to have to talk to him!

3. Whitley's obsession with sharks and other ocean animals is popping up in all of her conversations. For instance, Old McDonald no longer has a typical farm. When I sing, "And on that farm he had a..." Whitley always calls out some silent sea creature like "Octopus!" or "Sea horse!" We have to get pretty creative to come up with what these guys might say. I'm starting to think she's just trying to stump me.

4. I don't know if it's toddlerhood or what, but lately, Whitley has seriously been testing some boundaries. Some of her new favorite sayings are, "Go 'way," "Stop it," and "Leave me 'lone." She seems to know it's naughty to say these to mom and dad, though, and she's pretty sneaky in how she gets away with it. Usually, she'll be in her high chair or playing in her room, and she'll make a frowny face. Then, staring right at me, she'll put her hand up, "No, go 'way," and then after a beat she'll add... "Rocky." She'll repeat it, too, like that's really what she meant! "Yeah, go 'way, Rocky!" Sometimes he's not even in the room.

5. Whitley's been doing this for a while now, but it's still one of my favorites... She likes to ask what different characters from her favorite movies "say," and I try to think of a characteristic line from the film as an answer. Well, she really stumped me when she asked what Scar, the villain of Lion King, says. I was sitting there thinking, with my pointer on my chin, and said, "Hmmmmm." Well, she took that as the answer and does it all the time! If she's trying to think about something (or if you ask her what Scar says) she'll hold her own chin and hmmmmm. It's so sweet.

6. And finally, sometimes Whitley is just so sweet, that you can't help but laugh. My mom got a kick out of picking Whitley up from day care a few weeks ago, because Whitley said, "CC! Happy to see you!" I came home from yoga on Saturday, and Whitley threw herself at me. "Mommy! Mommy! Miss you SO much!" I love that she picked up those sayings.

Whitley's talking is so much fun. Everyday she thrills us with her funny comments. Can't wait to hear what she comes up with tomorrow!

Whitley and Tom walk through the American Tobacco Campus.

Whitley loves to play hide-and-seek, and in typical toddler fashion, will hide in the same spot round after round. Well, here's her new favorite- she pulls out the lazy susan door!

"Mommy, find me!"

One joke that never gets old is putting panties on her head. Here Whitley plays peek-a-boo with one of her new Dora pairs. (She's working on peeing in the potty at school!)
